John stepped off the bus onto a dusty dirt road. The sun beat down on the baked earth and he felt that the heat of the ground was enough to melt the soles of his shoes. As the dust settled, John cringed at the sight of his childhood home. Although he had worked these fields from a young age, John never felt a kinship to this land. His parents only shook their heads when John left the family farm over a year ago to study at the University. No one in the community believed that a farm boy could succeed in the big city, but John was determined to prove them wrong. John worked long hours in the big city, saving money for a class trip to Italy. He even joined the language club at the University and was studying Italian in his spare time. The trip was only two months away when John learned that both of his parents had perished in a barn fire. He was forced to leave the University and return to the farm in time to harvest the year’s crop of tomatoes.
Although he had been a farm boy all his life, no one in the community believed that John could run the farm by himself. Before he went away, they had doubted that he could succeed in the big city. Now, they laughed to see this “city-slicker” trying to start the old tractor. John toiled in the fields from sun up until sun down. The harvest was almost finished when a letter came in the mail. The letter stated that VeggieCorp had made changes to their budget and no longer intended to purchase John’s produce. That night, John tossed and turned. He had left his life in the city in order to save this crop. Now, he had a barn full of tomatoes that he could not sell. In the early hours of the morning, John finally drifted to sleep. In his dreams, John encountered a beautiful woman speaking eagerly to him in Italian. If he had only been able to continue his studies, he would have been able to understand her words.
The next day, John went into town to show his letter to the other farmers. When he entered the county store, John was surprised to see the community in an outrage. Ever farmer in the county had received the same letter. There were thousands of tomatoes and no one was willing to buy them. John spent the afternoon calling the canned food companies, but no one was buying tomatoes. That night, he again dreamt of the Italian woman. “Gianni, Gianni,” she called, speaking fervently in Italian and holding out a handful of ripe tomatoes. John woke from his troubled sleep as the sun rose on the farming community. If only he could remember his Italian lessons from months before! All day, John could not stop thinking about the woman in his dreams. He just had to know what she was trying to tell him. That evening, John ordered a subscription to Rosetta Stone TOTALe. He studied through the night and every spare moment for the next several days. When John finally went back to bed, he dreamt of the Italian woman once more. This time, the tomatoes in her hands were starting to shrivel, but her words were finally clear to him. When John awoke, he knew exactly what he must do. Although no one in the country was buying tomatoes, John now knew that there was a tomato shortage in Europe. He called VegitaleC.ia and explained in Italian that he was looking to sell some tomatoes. The executives had been struggling to find tomatoes in Europe and were happy to buy all of the tomatoes in John’s hometown. Not only did John save his farming community, but he also was given the opportunity to travel to Italy and witness the manufacturing process. At the end of his visit, the executive presented him with a jar of tomato sauce made from his tomatoes. On the label there was a picture of an Italian supermodel holding a bunch of tomatoes. John instantly recognized the woman from his dream.
After leaving the sauce factory, John decided to stop for an authentic Italian dinner. As he entered the local Ristorante, John bumped into a tall woman. It was the model from his dream! John suavely introduced himself in Italian and invited the model to join him for dinner.
